My father was taking my grandma to check out one of these homes for old people. The situation had become such that she needed assistance. She couldn’t be by herself anymore. Dad wanted to find a really nice place for her where she could be with several other people and which had great facilities. He had already been to several other places but not yet found one he liked. This is from the day I went with them to see the supposedly best place.
We parked the car, got out, got grandma and her wheelchair out, put them together and were then greeted by the Head of Staff. We were shown around the home, the dining room, grandma’s potential new bedroom, the outdoors space with a huge garden and a fountain, the exercise and play facilities, etc. Everyone here seemed happy and we were really impressed with the place.
The Head of Staff wanted to have a private word with dad, so dad asked grandma to sit and wait in the lobby while he was chatting. In the lobby grandma had an attentive and friendly lady look after her and keeping her with company.
Grandma sat there for a while but then started to lean over to the left side. The lady looking after her hurried up to her, shifted her up and placed a pillow at her left side. After a short while grandma then started to lean towards the right side. The lady hurried to her and put her up in position, putting another pillow at her right side. Shortly thereafter grandma started to lean forward. She got propped up again by the helpful lady.
When dad came back from the chat, he was convinced about this place. The Head of Staff had given him a really good impression and this home was absolutely the best he had seen. The price was also acceptable so he really thought that he found the right place for grandma.
"Mom", he said "I really think you will be happy here! What do you say?"
"I do not want to stay here!" grandma said.
He was surprised and uttered: "But Mom - this is just the way you like it. A big outdoors space and lots of facilities. And you get your own room with a nice view of the garden. You will be taken good care of here."
Grandma said firmly: "I will not stay here - they don´t allow me to fart!"
