Watch out for the US taxman!
By taxman11 Story ID: 117
One year when I filed my taxes (in the US), I made an honest mistake and forgot to include an income item. I had withdrawn amounts early from a pension account and as a result incurred a tax penalty. I honestly forgot to include this in the tax return. It's a completely different story, but it was indeed an honest mistake.
However, I changed address and didn’t receive the notification of this additional tax until more than a year later. The amount of the tax was in excess of $3,000.
When I finally got this notification to my new address, the taxman had added an amount for accumulated interest. So now I was told to pay the initial tax amount + interest that had accumulated.
I wrote back to the taxman and said that I had not received the initial notification of the tax until this point and therefore did not accept to pay for the accumulated interest. I battled this back and forth over three or four letters, but did not have any luck. The taxman did not budge and showed no understanding – he wanted his money!
One sunny and otherwise lovely day, I looked at my Bank of America account online and noticed that an amount exactly equal to what the US taxman claimed he was owed had been deducted from my account!
So without my approval or permission, the US taxman had dipped his hands into my account and taken what he claimed was his! He accessed my bank account just like it was his. Thanks Bank of America for keeping my money safe!
What happed to freedom? And liberty? And property rights? And fair process?
I was shocked and appalled – the government really has you by the balls! And I am sure there are plenty of other similar stories out there.
